The UK has incredible and varied mountain and hill environments to discover. The reasons for visiting these unique locations may be personal, but there are enormous advantages. If you want to boost your self-reliance and have the opportunity to play a more crucial part in your walk, this is for you! We strive to set you on course to develop abilities that will allow you to be comfortable and secure in wild locations that are truly special.

Under summer circumstances, we will equip you with the abilities necessary for confident and skilled hill walking in the UK mountains & hills.


For 3 days hill walking, a appropriate level of physical fitness.


  • Navigation capabilities including map, compass and electronic devices

  • Informed decision making in the development of practical and feasible route plans

  • Understanding the weather in the mountains, hills and moorland areas

  • Addressing an emergency and comprehension of the role of Mountain / Dartmoor rescue

  • Planning and handling of water hazards on the hill

  • What clothes and equipment to bring and how to use them.


We only supply instruction for the course, it does not include transport or personal equipment. Your instructor will want to check that personal equipment is appropriate for the activity. Listed below are the essentials;

  • Waterproof jackets and trousers

  • Insulated synthetic jacket

  • Appropriate footwear for the attended course

  • Gaiters

  • 40lt Rucksack

  • Walking Poles

  • Personal Clothing

  • Warm Outdoor Wear

  • Insulating Layers

  • Trekking / Climbing Trousers (not cotton)

  • Hat & Gloves

  • Whistle

  • Compass – Silva type 4 recommended

  • Waterproof Map Case

  • Rucksack liner (or sturdy bin liner) / dry bags

  • Hydration system (water bottle)

  • Map information – we encourage everyone on Climb Devon summer navigation & skill courses to have a map covering Dartmoor National Park. OS map OL28 1:25 000 covers the areas we use and is the recommended map for our courses - other scales will be discussed on the course. Please ensure that this is a weather proof active map or you have a map case. For courses in other locations please contact us regarding map information.
