Advanced Navigation (1 Day)
We strive to create map & compass proficiency and develop relocation techniques as well as consolidating current navigation understanding. We will also have the opportunity to explore GPS technology and how to use it together with map and compass. This course is the ideal step from the course ' Basic Navigation ' and can be added to create a course lasting two days to further develop skill. Introduces compass skills, bearing selection, path selection, and relocation when lost.
1 DAY | RATIO 1:4 | £90.00
Completion of the introduction course or anyone who has had some fundamental navigation knowledge or would like to be reminded of the compass abilities that are often learned.
IS IT FOR ME?
This one-day course is suitable for anyone who has had some fundamental navigation knowledge or who wants to be reminded of compass abilities that are often learned. It's about gaining proficiency with a compass so the focus is on constant advancement from map setting to checking the direction of line features to take and walk across the open ground on a bearing.
This course will provide the abilities needed in the UK mountains for bad weather and accurate navigation in poor visibility.
Usually you'll be with one leader in a group of no more than 4. The day is to learn the main compass techniques outdoors through some fun exercises.
The day will continue with map skills. The abilities are developed, how to take a bearing from the map, apply it to distinct conditions, follow the compass on a bearing, keep going in a straight line, measure the distance on the map apply it to what you see in front of you.
Other navigation approaches come into play, such as using "attack points," "aiming off," recognizing and using "catching features" and easy strategies for relocation.
Our one-day course starts at 09.00 if you'd like to arrive by 0830 there will be no loss of teaching time. We will end the day with a review and will be finished no later than 5pm.
